The name of the Agrostis derives from the Greek agòs «campo». The genus includes herbaceous plants sometimes creeping, resistant, and therefore suitable for ornamental lawns and for sports fields, which have a remarkable ability to propagate, forming in short time green and compact carpets.
Cultivated species of Agrostis:
on the market there are almost exclusively the species used for grass; the most common are Agrostis stolonifera which adapts to all terrains and is very resistant; A. tenuis which has a lower bearing than the previous one and a long period of vegetative activity (up to the first winter colds).
Cultivation:
usually, the Agrostis are sown in the spring, since in this period the seeds germinate more quickly; it is however possible to sow at the end of summer, avoiding the excessive heat. To obtain a beautiful turf it is necessary a careful preparation of the ground and assiduous care, especially in the initial period. Since the A. stolonifera propagates in all directions by means of stolons it is possible to obtain a lawn also with the transplanting of small clods at 5-10 centimeters of distance from each other. Frequent watering, rolling and tanning is required as soon as the vegetation has taken hold.
